"Carbon Fiber" generally refers to CFRP- Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic. These Discs are Carbon/Carbon. There is no plastic resin near these parts. It seems to be Carbon reinforced Carbon, I hoped they would talk about that. He specifically asked about the process and that's when I expected some accurate info.

10 kun oldin
Axel Knutt
Axel Knutt

The initial disc blanks are made up from carbon fibre matt layered up to the required thickness with the epoxy as usual… they then press a hook into the layers and pull it back so the fibres from each layer are entangled with the layers above and below. Then the blank is roasted until all the epoxy is burnt away just leaving the mesh of carbon fibre … a bit like burnt toast. At this point the choice is to impregnate the carbon mesh with either a silica based material to make carbon/ceramic discs as used on high-end road cars OR impregnate the carbon mesh with carbon thru vapour deposition (carbon/carbon) - where a carbon rich gas is forced around and thru the mesh until it builds up to form a solid disc. That’s why it takes months to make. As you can imagine, the carbon mesh blank is very fragile, so the wastage in manufacturing is very high which is not what you want for a product that takes 6 months to make.

6 kun oldin
nibbsie 78

@The Racing Ban as above its not carbon ceramic as per road cars, its carbon fibre reinforce or impregnated with a silica, producing a silicon carbide

9 kun oldin
Daniel Gregson
Daniel Gregson

A preformed body of very pure carbon are cooked at 2650*C for quite some time to heat treat and arrange the carbon atoms in to a very stable and basic molecular structure. However, after this Brembo have come up with a new way to finish the discs instead of using the standard chemical vapor deposition to impregnate the disc with pure silicon to create a silicon carbide matrix. The CER material is a trade secret and will not likely be known outside of Brembo for some years. The end material is likely not using a ceramic matrix and is purely a carbon matrix using multiple types or arrangements of carbon molecules (such as graphene or graphite) to create a more resilient disc and allows them to create the 1400 holes or so throughout the disc that allows for proper cooling.

@Sam NotLoading Iirc from a documentary I watched years ago, the final product is Carbon Fiber Reinforced Silicon Carbide. The process is something along these: Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic -> baked it until what remain of the resin is just carbon -> Carbon Fiber Reinforced Carbon -> infuse silicon into it -> Carbon Fiber Reinforced Silicon Carbide

My mind is kinda blown now. So, from the moment a driver steps on the brake pedal, now his body weight pulls forward adding extra pressure on the pedal, so the car will brake even harder, and that's a positive loop until the car has decelerated enough that the driver can pull back his foot off the pedal... How can they regulate the pressure to avoid locking up?

10 kun oldin
Todd B

The heel rests on the petal unit that Craig has allows the driver to limit the forward movement of the foot.

Training, practice and seatbelts.

10 kun oldin
Ardsz
Ardsz

Drivers are tightly strapped in via seatbelts. There's barely any movement forward. You want the seatbelts tight and no body movement to resist lateral g-force otherwise you will be using your physical strength to resist g-forces on your body and will get tired faster. Plus you want the to be strapped in tight incase your car flips during an accident. I drove some F-Renault and F-3 races in the early 2000s and we are strapped in real tight. there almost no movement forward under breaking.

10 kun oldin

@Reynaldi Widjaja that's a mostly a misconception (they make the same mistake in the video, though). Even if the G-forces push your body forward, it's still your leg's muscles that apply all the force between your body and the pedal. Imagine you are standing on a scale, with your legs slightly bent (so it's your muscles carrying your weight), and carrying a heavy bag on your shoulders. It's true, the scale would score higher because of the heavy bag, but your your legs have to support all the extra weight all the same. It's the same here. G forces push you to the pedal, but your leg muscles still has to put those 130Kg of force to both brake and keep your body from sliding forward.

5 kun oldin
jsquared1013
jsquared1013

@giogio182 in addition to what Ahsan stated, the driver's leg pushing the pedal is still what pressurizes the fluid in the master cylinder, and thus the brake system itself. The "by wire" bit applies mostly to the controls regulating the bias at the rear wheels (controlling the split between MGU-K regenerative braking and the pressure valve that determines how much the hydraulic line pressure coming from that master cylinder is reduced, so that the two braking methods balance out, so to speak).

wondering, why aren't break pads covering the entire disk? Isn't it better to have more contact surface?

11 kun oldin
Axel Knutt
Axel Knutt

I think that the rules state they can only have a maximum of 6 pistons per wheel (3 on each side of the calliper) so you’re not going to be able to get even pressure if the pads went all the way around the disc.

6 kun oldin
Synchro Mech
Synchro Mech

IAS comment is the best answer. Another thing to understand is momentum and having a full disc covered by brake pads would cause the physics of a car to be vastly unsettled at very high speeds.

10 kun oldin
mik&mouse
mik&mouse

actually it's the other way around, the discs could be smaller but they're only this size for their cooling purpose

10 kun oldin
ias2424
ias2424

This is correct, but the braking performance of F1 is limited by the tires, not the brakes. Note that the tires will lock up before the brakes fail. Also, if the pads covered the entire disk, cooling and dissipation of heat would be difficult, and they would weight a lot more without any benefit. This is also why F1 cars stopped using drum brakes 60 years ago.

Actually, Barichello still used 3 pedals and right foot braking in some of his Ferrari years (he was using his right foot for braking as late as 2004, not sure if he still had 3 pedals at the time), so he was right foot braking for quite a while after the start of his F1 career.

The coolest pedal arrangement (in my opinion) was that of the MP4/12. People always talk about Häkkinen's car, which had two brake pedals and the throttle. But unlike Häkkinen, his teammate Coulthard hadn't yet adapted to using clutch paddles on the wheel (though he still had them on his wheel), so he had a clutch pedal in there as well, meaning he had a total of four pedals for his two feet; clutch, throttle, brake and fiddle brake. According to rumours, the McLaren engineers even joked that they gave Coulthard a pedal for each corner of his rectangular head :D

As others have pointed out, the specification for the rear wings in Monza is (probably) the narrowest of the calendar, contrasted by the specification for Monaco, where the top speed isn't great, and the turns are sharp - thus the rear wings are the largest to provide as much downforce (therefore, grip) while turning.

10 kun oldin
a_stone

No the wings are different. They're a lot thinner in height and often called the Monza spec as this is the setup with the least amount of drag out of all of the tracks.
